Thank you so much for stopping by my site. I invite you to leave your mark. After you submit your entry, you will be returned to the guestbook.
I have often wondered how authors come up with the names in their books. Well, now I know. While reading "Return to Sullivan's Island" I came upon the name"Brigitte Miklaszeiwski" who is a good friend of my brothers, who in turn is a good friend of DBF's. I can't tell you what a thrill it was to come across a familiar name in a book. By the way the book was wonderful. I've read some of your books before and have always enjoyed them. Thank you so much! Thank you Ms. Frank for your great books. I haven't read a book in years. We spend January and February each year in Myrtle Beach. This year the condo had a book of yours called "Pawleys Island". I didn't feel like doing anything one evening so I picked up the book. I was so mesmerized with the book I couldn't put it down. Having drove around the island, each year, I felt like I was living the book. I bought the book "Bulls Island" and the same thing happened. We are home now and I have a card from our local library. I picked up my second book today but now I need to work around the house. The book will have to wait until dark. Thank you for your inspiring books. I have a new passion.

Whenever I need my soul restored, I go to our local library and bring all your books home and reread them. They never fail to pick me up and shake me back to a feeling of comfort and joy. Many times I laugh out loud and then just have to read the passage to my husband and then we laugh together. You have brought joy to us both. Please keep writing...I especially love the sequels, and look forward to more. God Bless you and thanks for all the enjoyment. Jane

I just finished "Sullivan's Island" yesterday. I usually read when I eat a meal. But I was so into the saga of Susan, Maggie and Beth that I took the entire afternoon to finish the book. I was transported there, surrounded by the love that Livvie exuded, laughed and cried, too. This is only the second "fan" letter that I have ever writen. I now look forward to finding all the other books you have written--the first one will be "Return to Sullivan's Island". Thank You, thank you, thank you!

Thank you for all the stories and laughs at the SC book festival. I especially enjoyed the "in law" stories, as my husband endured my parents into their 90's. They were part of the "sometimes right but never in doubt" generation. My husband graciously, most times, hauled them on Our vacations so they too could have a change of scenery. We would try to slip away for a moment by our selves, my dad would ask where we were going, "out to" we would reply. His answer, "let me get my shoes, I'll go too". I miss those vacations now. Keep us laughing, life's a great journey especially when shared with others.

I am the wannabe "geechee" gal who wrote to you a few years ago after reading your first 2 books. Well, this wannabe just wants to be even more now that I have read all the rest of your books! I don't know what it is or what happens when I open the pages, but its magical, mystical and thrilling all at the same time! You make me want to be down there in the lowcountry so badly! I visit there every 2 years or so for vacay, and the desire to live out whatever years I have left down there is so strong and the pull to be there is so great, that I sometimes just know its part of the magical charm and the aura. I had been there twice before I discovered your books and the magic is as strong as the very first day I set my barefeet on that hallowed ground. Reading your books just pulls on my heartstrings even more! I anticipate moving there for good by the end of 2011. So until then, I just read and re-read your books to keep that sense of magic alive for me. Thank you for writing such amazing, funny, tuggin at the heartstrings books. You are one hell of an awesome storyteller, and I anxiously wait for more! A BIG fan........Joanie

Just finished your last book and once again I can't wait for the next one. One interesting tid bit. My mother and I were talking this evening and she commented that she kept hearing the narrator talk about "plough mud" pronounced like plow, and finally realized that he was talking about "plough mud" pronounced like pluff. We both chuckled about this. We had always thought it was spelled like pluff so we learned something. This narrator needs to come down to the Island and just smell it. You may want to let the people who produce this tape know the proper pronunciation. It would be a shame for not to know it by its correct pronunciation. Our family has always called it, "That wonderful Island Perfume".

You are the best recommendation Pat Conroy ever made. I enjoyed reading "Bulls Island" but LOVED "Full of Grace". Your characters are so real I know those people. Nonna even became lovable. Hey Dorothea, I met you at the Mango signing at Mt. Pleasant. I live in PA and Summerville. I enjoyed the character of Betts so much. She drove so much of the class conflict situation, and the sadness that comes from matriarchal interference. The sexual tension that built in that long, lost relationship was palpable. I feel Dorthea's Lowcountry series of books are the best.I have read her books up to the newestest editions. Her stories are belieable and she covers important realistic problems in todays society.I am finishing, "Full of Grace" & I think it will be a favorite of mine.I also appreciate the freshness of the characters when the love making isn't every day or night.I faithfully agree with another reader: "You don't get anything else done when reading her novels!"The christmas book for some reason , not really sure why just didn't keep my attention and wasn't as good as other books she's written.I think it's common for that to happen, everyone's opinion varies.I do thoroughly enjoy her books and look forward to the new titles!Keep all these good things a'comin I say!!!

Miss Dorothea, Thank you so much for writing Full of Grace! As a Catholic convert of 2 years (from Southern Baptist - there's a book!), I enjoyed all the Catholic lingo and as a life-long Southerner I enjoyed visiting your "neck of the woods". I'm not a huge fiction reader so it's not unusual that I had not heard of you. I plan to check the library for other books of yours. I'm living with my sister currently, as I am being diagnosed with some type of autoimmune disease - LOTS of time to read! I appreciate that Full of Grace is without trash and that your characters have flaws that I can relate to. Impact: I prayed a novena to Maria Goretti (a new saint for me) and I'm delving into some study of Our Lady of Guadalupe - fascinating! So, hey, thanks. Rae P.S. Oh, I think you really nailed a lot of cradle Catholics' qualms about coming back to the Catholic Church, showed priests in a good light, etc!

Dear Doretha, I am embarrased to say this, but I just recently found out about your books when we had a book fair at Trident Hospital, where I am employed. I am hooked! As they say, better late than never. I forever will be a loyal fan. I was born in West Virginia but was raised in Summerville. Go Green Wave! Anyway, my husband and I are truly beach bums! Our vacations are always spent at the beach. You really take me back to my childhood and bring back alot of special memories. It is so cool seeing the actual names and places in print that I have actually been to and grown up around. Oh yeah, I saw where Billy's Back Porch and has been sold to new management as of late last year. The new name is Simply Okra. Don't know what happened. Billy's mother, Mrs. Lu used to cook for my cousins day care years ago. She could cook one mean pan of corn bread! They say Billy got his cooking skills from her! Just so you know, when I'm reading your books, I get NOTHING else accomplished! Keep up the great work and wonderful books. Your books are so clever, witty, fun, great reads that I can't put down UNTIL I see blasphemy coming from the mouths of these wonderful people. I'm not so naive to think these folks might not actually use such terms but truth be told, none of the people with whom I associate speak this way nor does it seem necessary in many great novels. Would it destroy the quality of your genius to omit the blasphemy? Thank you for the opportunity to ask.

I have enjoyed your books so much. A friend of mine lived in Mt. Pleasant for years, so I visited the area many times. Please note that in Pawley's Island, on pages 107-108, 3 times the same grammar error occurs. The printed page says parent's instead of parents' -- This is a common problem if Microsoft Word is set to correct grammar errors. Word cannot place apostrophes correctly! A few pages later the correct plural possessive is used. -- Just a thought for the next printing.

Dear Dorothea, I first starting reading your books several years back while on vacation at Surfside Beach, SC. I was in Walmart looking for a book with a South Carolina theme and picked up Isle of Palms basically for the cover. One I started the book, I was hooked! Dear Mrs. Frank: In 2005, my son gave me my 1st book written by you for Mother's Day called: Pawleys Island. This is where we had started staying for our vacations. He thought it would be a nice for me to read a story about where we were staying. BOY, did I get hooked on your books. I have all of your books and I really enjoyed reading every one of them. But, of course my favorite is Pawleys Island. I have read this book 3 times and it still holds my facination each time I read it. We usually have 2-3 couples to go with us when we go on vacation to Pawleys and I always tease them that they have to read the book "Pawleys Island" before we go so they can actually see the places you refer to in your book. All of us ladies pick out places that you may have chosen to put into your book that is not the real place. It's great. My son is a detective on the Mt. Pleasant, SC police force, but lives in the West Ashley part of Charleston. Last summer (2009) when we went down to visit him and my daughter in law, he asked me what I would like to do. I told him I had a list of places that I wanted to see. Isle of Palms, Shem Creek, Sullivan's Island. He asked me why I wanted to go to all of these places. I told him it was his fault - he was the one that started me on your books with Pawleys Island and that I already knew what it looked like so I needed to see the other places that you had wrote about. He just laughed and we took off to see the places you had wrote about and we had the best time. We visited Shem Creek Bar & Grill and had the best meal. I have just got my copy of your last book, Return to Sullivan's Island. I can't wait to get started on it. I just want to thank you for writing such wonderful books. It brings back old memories of when I was a young child and going to the beach with my parents. Thank you again for writing such memorable books and giving your readers a trip to places of interest, love and laughter.

Dear Ms. Frank, I happened upon your books at the library. I first listened to Bull's Island, then Sullivans and now The Christmas Pearl. I was smittened with the first CD of Bull's Island. I find myself transformed into the story and will drive my car just to listen to the story! I must tell you that I love the person who reads The Christmas Pearl! She is so original...I'm from the South and I love her accent. You have the traditions of my youth in this story. I cried tonight when Pearl shows up from Heaven to help. For some strange reason....I thought of my Mother who passed 4yrs ago! I felt her spirit in Pearl! You seem to capture an essence in your characters that feel's like home. You bring out that we live in an imperfect world and we ourselves are imperfect...but you love others as they are...and that is the perfect part! Keep up the soulful writing...it is a gift to us! Dearest, sweetest Lady,
Before anything I have to tell you how much I adore your stories. I would say your writing, but that's just too sterile a term. Your stories, your characters, your humor, your love for each of them comes through with every word. I love the way you can almost feel the hand of every character involved...the way they speak, the recipe's, the way they speak, move, laugh...well it's all in there! I can't believe I've already read them all! I truely hope you don't lay down your pen yet. You have helped me through some pretty darn tough times over the last few years. You made me laugh Dot! Thank you. All my love and appreciation....the almost Geechee gal! H.D.

Hi Dottie...just started reading "Return..." on my new Sony e-reader. Guess what?...the entire download has no punctuation and I really don't think you wroe it that way!! I have reported it to Sony who is contacting the publisher, but thought you might like a heads up. It is good and I am really enjoying it. Feel like a proof reader though! Have started a friendship with Karen White...she lives nearby and we have coffe and chat....ah, more Charleston stories!! My own next story is weaving the Ravenels and the Middletons from 1674 to 2000,,gosh, but I am overwhelmed with all the info I am finding on my husband's families. I got started with your books when I read BULL'S ISLAND. I enjoyed it so much that I went to amazon & ordered every one of your books. Big mistake. All I do is read. Laundry needs folding & putting away, & I have your book in front of my nose. I have a question regarding a couple of characters. Caroline & Dr. Jack were featured in PLANTATION. He was kind, compassionate & helped Caroline through a difficult time. Caroline was a doormat to her husband, but went home & worked out the difficulties with her family, inherited the plantation and gave her brother several acres so he could have his own place. She did not seem shallow or snippy. But yet in ISLE OF PALMS you bring her back with a totally different personality - stuck up, insensitive, shallow. Also, you bring back Dr. Jack as an older man cruising for young babes, even kind of desperate. Why did you change these two personalities so drastically?

Happy New Year. I found you in my local library quite by accident and have since read 4 of your books. What a find!!! Exceptional development of characters, quick wit, fresh dialogue, interesting family entanglements and delightful descriptions of the lowcountry. Currently planning a trip to the Eastern Shore of VA this spring to enjoy the peace, beauty and historical significance of yet another segment of our wonderful country, the ocean, and to see the wild horses, my passion! Thank you for your brilliant and oh, so natural, writing style. Perchance I will make it to your islands one of these days! Best regards.

I anxiously await any new book that is due to be released. I get so involved in your books, I forget everything around me. They are so well written, character development is perfect, plot lines are not left unfinished. They're wonderful. One teeny, tiny mistake you seem to make in every book. Example: "handfuls" There is no such thing as several "fuls". It's handsful, basketsful, bagsful. There are many hands, baskets, bags, but not many "fuls" My goodness, if I had written as many books as you have, this teeny, tiny mistake probably should be overlooked, but being an English major, it didn't pass my notice. Sorry.

Just finished reading Return to Sullivan's Island which I very much enjoyed. I had to laugh at the comment about people escaping from Ohio. I'm one of many who escape down south from Ohio. It's amazing the number of Ohio plates one sees heading south. Max Mitchell was from "Cleveland, OH" - I grew up there. Before we started vacationing in the Garden City and Surfside areas, we used to vacation at Oak Island. Maybe Livvie is telling me something!

Have read all your books and they make me homesick for places I've never been - yet!! I really do enjoy your skills and will continue to read what you produce. Two things, however: in Return to S I, when speaking of Aunt Sophie's death, the term "miocardial infraction" was used. Made me wonder where your copy editor was. It's INFARCATION!!!!! Also, why oh why do you always have a man show up to save the "damsel in distress"? Disappointing that your women can't haul themselves out of their scrapes by themselves. Still, LOVE YOUR books.

Hey there, The people that work for you probably reads all of these if anyone. But, I thought I might try. See I've read everything you've written. In the last one I'm not so sure of part of me wasn't in it. I met you on Bulls Island. I was the girl who asked all the hard questions. Well, many of my friends have been telling me to write for years. In fact one of my favorite guitar players who's an avid reader has said it more than once. Couple that with a crazy true story and you have me thinking about it. That plus my momma always said no one would believe what we went through and my oldest brother telling me to do it. Anyways, I'm not where to start nor how to organize it. High School 1.3 Grad school 3.8 but I need assistance. You can help me or watch someone else mold. Either way it's gonna be a best seller!

I am reading Return to Sullivan's Island and am enjoying it a lot so far. However, I am stuck on one small note and had to reread your author's bio to make sure you were even from the South! When Beth and Max have a glass of tea, you have them adding sugar....any good Southerner knows tea comes sweet already! You have to specifically ask for unsweet tea, which they would not have since they added sugar! Just a little nitpicking but something I noticed~

This is the recipe you requested. Enjoy! RUM BALLS 1 cup vanilla wafers (crushed) 1 cup powdered sugar 2 cups chopped pecans 2 tablespoons cocoa 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1/4 cup light rum (or 3 tablespoons cream and 1 teaspoon rum extract) Granulated sugar for rolling Combine vanilla wafers, sugar 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans and cocoa. Add corn syrup and rum. Mix well. Shape into 1 inch balls. Roll half in fine granulated sugar and remainder in chopped pecans. Do not bake. Yields 3 dozen. (I "crush" vanilla waffers and chop pecans in the food processor or blender!)

Dottie, Thank you for that wonderful video about Christmas on Sullivans' Island. My husband, Bill, smiled when you recalled midnight mass at Stella Maris and the priest shaking a man awake. I love Christmas so much and now with 2 grandchildren, I get to pass on the special memories from my childhood. I can see my grandfather sitting at his little kitchen table shelling pecans and to this day it brings tears to my eyes thinking of those coffee cans filled with pecans that he sent at Christmas when I married and moved away. Not just pecans but filled with love. Happy and sad all at the same time. Merry Christmas!

Hi Dotty, thanks you for your warm Holiday greeting. I enjoy and have read all of your wonderful books. I am currently rereading The Christmas Pearl and included the recipes from the book in my Christmas menu last year. My brother-in-law is from South Carolina and really loved my red rice and I told him it was a recipe in you book and he went and bought The Christmas Pearl for his mom to read who now lives in Alabama. I am also writing you as I have a question regarding a project for which I need some professional advice. My husband John, sent a newsletter/magazine to a cult following of a little over 30 people for approximately 10 years. The core audience was old high school friends. In that time, he manufactured 90 issues. The subjects ranged from personal stories, baseball, football, professional wrestling, boxing, religion and politics. Readers would often respond with "Letters To The Editor" that would appear in the following issue along with a response. On three occasions, he received kudos from professional writers. At this point, he and his friend Brian, who contributed to "Arnolfo's Allegory" (title) on a regular basis, have thought about gathering selected portions and putting something together in a form of short stories/essays to see if it could get published. The targeted audience would be "Baby Boomers." If you could point them in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Effie Arnolfo, San Francisco,ca

Like so very many others, my sister visited Charleston last summer and fell in love with it. She immediately bought a copy of Sullivan's Island and raved to me about how much she enjoyed it. I had heard of the book but couldn't have told you the author's name and from the way my sister described it, there wasn't enough "who dunit?" in it for my taste. But I ran out of something to read one day and headed to the library. I decided to check the shelf and came across Shem Creek. I loved Sullivan's Island and Pawley's Island, not so much Return to Sullivan's Island. However, while in Charleston this past week, I did pick up Bull's Island and look forward to reading it! I love your style of writing making you one of my favorite writers! My husband and I went to Sullivan's Island while in Charleston at my insistance as I wanted to see it for myself having once lived on Oak Island, NC. It is such a lush island! It seems like it has never been touched by a hurricane but I know that can't be so. We also visited the fort and then Stella Maris Church which we fell in love with! Was it a true story in Sullivan's Island about the Virgin Mary crying or was that just a made up thing? I also hope your next book brings you back to the writing of Sullivan's Island and not the "sequel". Pam Martin

I just finished Bulls Island. It is the first of yours I have read, but I am sure won't be the last. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed ready a book so much I couldn't put it down! My soon to be mother in law lent a library copy of it to me while I was in the hospital and I started it and was feeling a bit too under the weather to finish until today and I literally couldn't put it down until I was done. I just relocated to SC as my fiance is from here and I just love it here and especially the Charleston area so I fell in love with your book and all its descriptive aspects of this great state. Thank you and I look forward to reading your other books.

I have to admit, I picked up Plantation at a used book store down in Brunswick Co., NC this summer and ran out of "reading time" while on vacation. I've been caring for my elderly mother until recently when she passed away. Not aware of the plot, I picked up Plantation and was instantly hooked. I have to tell you, it was so therapeutic for me...I laughed, I cried, I saw my own relationship with my mother and LOVED this book. You now have a new fan, can't wait to get my hands on the others. Thank you for helping me grieve and for the insights you work into your fiction.

I've read your books over the years, and always look for news ones. Happened upon Full of Grace and was blown away . . . I actually had a miracle at a Shrine outside of Quebec City and was SO touched by how you handled the subject in your book, brought me to tears! Good ones; grateful ones! I'm telling EVERYONE about you now! Thanks SO much for sharing your talent and your sensitive heart! Sincerely, Marge (Hemsworth)

Hi! I ran to the bookstore the day that "Return to Sullivan's Island" came out, brought it home, and really didn't want to start it! If I did, then it would be over in a flash and I would have to wait another year for a new book! I decided to treat myself, and LOVED it (gee, no surprise there!). Just finished listening to the audio version in my car which was fantastic. Your books take a Southern California gal to the low country, and I honestly feel like I have been there, eaten at Jackson's Hole, had Mimi's pound cake, seen Huey's gallery, run into Grace at church - well, you see my point. Thank you so much for writing these books. I think you are fabulous - keep going, girl!

I came across Isle of Palms accidentally, oh am I thrilled by my good fortune! I was instantly intrigued as I started to read. What a compelling story, it was easy to find myself feeling for the characters as if I knew them, applauding their personalities coming to life through words...I thoroughly enjoyed it, many times laughing out loud, and I am looking forward to reading more of your work!

I have read many of your books. I finally got to visit the low country last month. It was everything that I expected it to be!! We stayed in Mount Plesant and visited Shem Creek, The Ilse of Palms, The Battery and walked the Cooper River Bridge. Even those it was my first time their I felt familiar with the area because you are so very detailed in your books. I enjoy your book very much and can't wait to read the newer ones. I just finished The Christmas Pearl and loved it.

Dot: Just finished reading Sullivan's Island for the second time. I first read it in 2004 and just felt like re-visiting the Island Gamble again. I love that time. I had a Livvie, at least during some summers when we would visit my family in Natchitoches, Louisiana. All of your writing takes me back to that very memorable time. Thank you so much!

I read Return To Sullivan's Island after seeing you on tv. I have since finished all but the Orginal Sullivan's Island which I am impatiently waiting for the library to find for me. While I am a Jersey Girl, I have chosen to live on a barrier island near Atlantic City. I would not trade island living for anything. I can't wait to visit the low country. It sounds like heaven on earth. I want to thank you for your inspiration. I am a sales and marketing professional and have gone thru 2 layoffs this year- still unemployed. I've been reading alot and your books have reminded me to keep following one's own dream, be open to the universe and make changes as necessary. It has been a wonderful reminder when everything looks bleak. You have made me laugh, think and re-examine my catholic roots. Thanks!

I enjoyed your book,Sullivan's Island. I started reading it in the hospital and boy did I need the laughs! I lived on Sullivans Island when I married mt first husband who was in the Air Force. We rented a two story house that had been converted into two apartments by a Jewish landlord! It was right across the street,or should I say narrow dirt road, from the beach. I thought I was in Heaven! We only stayed through the winter because rent went up in the summer. You certainly brought back all the memories of a beautiful island. Did you ever slide down the hill across from the stores that used to be either ammunitions or prisoners during the war? I did and it was tremndous fun. Thanks for the memories. Your books have brought me back to my love of reading after many years of reading about career subjects (arts education) and parenting. Having grown up in NC, schooled in SC, and married/relocated to OH, I feel connected to your characters and to the pull they feel to return to the lowcountry. What a time of year to read "The Christmas Pearl". In recent years the commercialism of Christmas has wicked from the true meaning. This book does wonders to bring it back, just as Pearl intended. This would make a WONDERFUL screenplay if it was done right; in the spirit of the season. LOVED IT!

I love your books! I am currently reading Return to Sullivan's Island. As one who is currently writing a novel and going through revisions and rewriting etc. I have to tell you of a problem on page 234 where Susan has just told Beth not to use the H word. The next lines should be Beth talking but it says Susan. I am sure the mistake was missed by an editor. I did a double take as it has been a long time since I have seen a mistake like that in a book. I still love your books and I know that I have a lot of work to do on mine and it just shows that even the best have problems with the end product! I look forward to reading more of your books as Sulivan's Island and Return to Sullivan's Island are my first two.

Hi again Dot,
I have not had the money to purchase your latest book. The one I've been waiting for for so long, Return to Sullivans. But I will soon. I just can't wait. I'm raising two baby girls now. My youngest sons children. I am 40 something. Honestly, sometimes I forget. I have to do mental math sometimes to tell people how old I am. Maybe after fifty, that wierd "blank" in my head will stop. I will say definitively, I AM FIFTY-TWO. I will just know. Anyone on the street could ask, "Hey! How old are you?!" And I'll just shout back 52! Wouldn't that be something? Love you Dot. Can't wait to get the new book. When will I have time to read it? Trish

After having read your books previous to "Bulls Island", I was surprised and very disappointed to find that that book was so unlike your others. It felt almost as if you had a ghost writer. Normally your characters are well developed. They don't have predictable lives. The plots are interesting because they, too, are not totally predictable. Your desctiptions of the geography and geology remain well done. Our library uses little red hearts pasted on light, romantic novels. "Bulls Island" should have one. I've long recommened your books to many reader friends. I'll leave out the above. I do wonder if you'll read this, for you are clearly writing books that sell. S. Osbeck

Mrs. Frank, I just finished Return to Sullivans Island, it was so wonderful, as all of your books are! My "people" stem from another island...Yonges Island...vacations were taken on Edisto! Although it wasn't Sullivans is seems we shared the same great childhood of fresh caught seafood food, deep family traditions and a deeper love of lowcountry waters and scents. I think my dear grandmothers, rest their souls, and their sisters must have gone to the same school as Beth's Aunt Maggie! You not only had to watch your mouth but also how you sat, stood, ate, how much you put on your plate and even how much you left! Lord help you if you chewed ice or worse yet gum! You would certainly get a heartbroken look and told "you look like a cow chewin' his cud." This book brought back memories of our own "Livvie" who's name was Charlotte and who we loved dearly. If you ever have a notion to write about the other end of the lowcountry, Yonges Island, Meggett, Hollywood, Edisto please act on it! It is quickly becoming a developed area and I am afraid we will no longer recognize it very soon. Long gone is the Hamburger Hut owned by the Hardee family, where it was such a treat to get a soft serve ice cream. The Donaldson Country store in Meggett, the monkey's and gators my godfather Frank kept at Marvins Meats are replaced by stacked lumber, Carl Butlers gas station across from Searson's Package Shop (the liquor stores actual building was donated to our church, Christ St. Pauls Episcopal and now serves as a Sunday school room, yes the red dots were painted over!) There are not many of the elders of the original families left and even fewer still in live in that area. The Searson's, (both my grandfather and great grandfather were Meggett mayors and anyone who grew up there had my grandmother as a teacher at the original St. Pauls Academy) the Marvin's, Butler's, Minshew's, Roger's,Chaplins,Bouineau's, Sires, Parrish's, Pederson's and many other original familys would love our children to read how wonderful times were growing up in rivers like the Toogoodoo! A writer like yourself could bring it alive for them and document it forever for us! If only everyone had had grown up with plough mud between their toes and fresh shrimp peeled around the table with family and friends, the world would surely be a better place. Thank you for bringing it all back, please give us more!

Hello from Idaho! I'm a 68 year old Idaho/South Carolina girl. What a wonderful surprise to find you and your books! A friend recently passed along Sullivan's Island to me, and the wonderful memories of my childhood returned with heartwarming familiarity. My maternal grandparents lived in Hartsville SC (Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Kelly) and my mother was an only child for most of her life, brothers passed away early(Thelma Ruth Kelly Grant)- I spent many, many years enjoying my SC family, friends, schools, churches, customs and food. Although I have thought about visiting SC many times after my Mom's passing, your book has convinced me that a trip back to Hartsville (with a side trip to Sullivan's Island) is a must before I can no longer travel! Thank you, thank you, thank you - I can't wait to read the rest of your books.

I was wondering if the Fr. Kelly that you mentioned in "Return to Sullivans Island" was Fr. Charles Kelly? I had a teacher at Ursuline High in Columbia

Hi Dottie, I just finished Return to Sullivans Island. It brought back many memories. I spent two years of my childhood on SI, 1951-53, I attended SI Elementary School, we lived on one of those two story houses with cisterns near the Baptist Church. My mother started the Brownies first troop ever on SI, and we met in the Baptist Church (at least I think it was the Baptist Church - the one that kind of sticks out in the road) - we then moved to Beaufort, where I really spent most of my childhood, my mother is originally from there and my parents set up a business there - so that is really my home. But I have great memories of those days for two years on SI. Both of my parents had jobs in Charleston, so that's why we lived there for those two years. Some names that I recall - wonder if you know any of these? My best friend was Barrie Hester, my sister's best friend was Ansley Williams (we have connected in later life in Columbia) we were also friends with the Huger family. I also remember a young guy who hung out with our family - Lee Coste - do any of these names strike memories with you? Your mention of Jack Alterman- my brother Bucky Wall and Jack are friends. My brother until recently lived in Mt.Plez, just moved to France this year. His wife's family lives there now, the Muirs. Your book brought back so many childhood memories! Playing on the fort, going to what I think was Ferraros store, I remember getting candy there. Our doctor was senior Dr. Durst. Anyway, I could go on and on, but was so emotional reading your book - bringing back childhood memories - I just felt that I needed to put some of this in writing. Connie Buford (we also have other friends in common, Sandra and Pat Conroy) Again, I loved the book. I also read the earlier one which I can't remember the name of - but when I read the reference to Annas Cabana in this book, I remembered Anna from the earlier book, but can't remember the name of the book?

mrs. Frank, i cant even put into words how much i enjoy your books, i have all of them and reread them and reread them. It doesnt seem like summer without a Dorothea Benton Frank book. I leave the real world behind everytime i open the front cover. Thank you so much for the wonderful characters you have created.

I love all of your novels. Thanks so much for your wonderful storytelling. I am currntly reading Plantation and would like to say that as a native Kentuckian I have to tell you that only whiskey produced in Kentucky can be called "bourbon". Jack Daniels is produced in Tennessee and is therefore whiskey not bourbon. We are proud of our bourbon and just thought you should know. Please keep writing your wonderful stories.

I was born a Yankee, but after devouring your books, now wish I had been born on one of the islands of South Carolina or Georgia. Thank you for your wit, beautiful soul and the ability to make a reader feel like they need to visit these wonderful, mystical, magical places.
