Happy New Year, Miss Dot! (If i may be so informal in my greeting!).

I am quite thrilled to be dropping a note that will CERTAINLY fall IMMEDIATELY into your "in" file ;-) lol. I kid, I kid...forgive me!

In all seriousness, I ADORE your writings! I devour each of your contribution to our literary world as a starving person might inhale a biscuit! I just love the low country and love YOUR writings set in this very special slice of southern americana with a heapin' helpin' of our gullah ancestors' influences. I mean, reallly? Does it really get better? Yeah no. Do not think so.;)

I desperately hope you will find another story within yourself that needs telling and that you will happily fire up the ole laptop and, VOILA! A novel is born! Especially hopefull for a gift of literary entertainment submitted by yourself sometime this year (2012).

Well? At least I am honest, 'eah? I am normally not a narcissitic (cannot even spell the damn word!) Demanding, impatient spoiled brat.

I just miss you! :-)

Hurry back and keep up the FABOOSH work! Your talent is breathtakingly awesome and admirable....of course, as with any "great power there comes responsibiliy"...heehee

Much love, many hugs, tons of laughs & several cocktails at sunset to and you team!

Thank you for taking the time to muddle through my thinly veiled yet quite wordy request for MORE!!

Have read ALL your books. Shortly after arriving in the Lowcountry from Oceanport NJ (post divorce) a friend told me about Sullivan's Island and I just fell in love with that book and quickly visited the Charleston/Sullivan's Island/Shem Creek area which have become favoriates (+ NJ guests). As a recent GYN/Breast Cancer survivor, in my downtime I went back and reread Sullivan's Island and Plantation mostly because of the humor you place on the human situation - I strongly believe that humor and good ol' fashioned belly laughter is as good medicine for recuperation as all the others (made my belly and chest ache at times but well worth it). And you, my friend, have a special way of making us all laugh at ourselves with similar siuations we encounter. You sister dynamic is so close to that of mine with my wonderful sister, Nancy. If you ever need some insight at the challenges of uterine/breast cancer sneaking up on a gal, let me know as I have a lot of stories (including the financial ramnifications even with adequate medical insurance). The GYN cancers don't have the public awareness like breast cancer (awesome - thank goodness) and gals have to be aware of the often ambiguous symptoms of ovarian/uterine/cervical cancers because all too often it is dx'd at a too late stage. My doctor up at MUSC gets very sad at the times she cannot do much for a late stage patient. Since I am a lucky one who had an obvious symptom/great gyn, I work with a group started here on Island by a mother/daugher(both dx.d with different gyn cancers at the same time) called "Help the Hoo-Hahs" (Facebook page) whose goal is to spread awareness of symptons and encourage gals to know their bodies and be forceful in their dx and care. They had a very successful innagural 10K race last September at Hutchinsons Island, GA. There is also a group of gyn surgeons/doctors who started a band (N.E.D-on Facebook) and travel around the country giving concerts to raise funds and awareness (ordered their CD and it is pretty good listening). So, Dotti, don't usually get on a soap box, but as it is 5 am and after my third chemo yesterday unable to sleep, thought since you have wonderful following, what a helpful way to communicate these importance issues, that I would plant a seed for when you are at a loss of an idea for a next book or chapter. I want to do everything I can to help all mothers, daughters, sisters and chick friends avoid some of what I have been going through. Knowledge is the key. After all, your books got me to visit other Lowcountry areas, try new recipes and restaurants. Looking forward to luncheon at Sea Pines CC in June - getting ticket early as I missed last. Good to hear that "Porch Lights" in time for beach reading. Hope my hair grows back a little by then so I don't become a "red head" in this Lowcountry sun. But, just love it.

I just love Sullivan's Island. It is such a quiet and reflective piece of earth that calls me back time and time again. One my last visit, I met your aunt, a sweet woman, while she was watching the sea from her golf cart. My sister and I thought perhaps she needed help so we struck up a conversation that lasted well over an hour and ended with an invitation to 'stop by and see me any time'. She told us all about the island and how she was the oldest resident and how brothers, sisters, cousins and nieces and nephews had all moved away. She told us that she was living in the oldest house on the island (I'll not give the address) and she was never moving. Then, she told us about you and her face lit up and she started to smile and she talked about how proud she was of you. I must admit, I hadn't at that time, read any of your books (although another sister has read them all and simply LOVES them) but I had to look up the lady who just made this woman smile. I hope to return to the island soon and I will make sure I look her up again. She is a wonderful story-teller. You must get that from her.

I recently discovered FOLLY BEACH at the bookstore, yes I am die-hard want to hold the book in my hands, smell the pages, feel the cover reader. The cover attracted my attention, the beach of course, but when I flipped it over and saw your smiling face, I immediately bought the book. So many authors have mug shots on their covers, I knew your book would be great, written by an author with a smile an genuine as your's. Loved the book, going out today to find another! Thank you for the read!

Well, sadly, I have devoured the last of your books, for now, but happily, I can re-read them all this summer on my Nook, sitting on the beach at Folly! We've been going there for three years now, but I grew up going to Pawley's :) As a child growing up in Asheville, SC was a much closer shot for a beach trip than the NC coast and my sisters and I have fond memories of crabbing in the Pawley's creek!
I was especially amused to see my cousin "Katie" featured in one of your books at her furniture store in Charleston!
Thanks for all your lovely imagery and I look forward to the next one :)

For an Ohio Buckeye turned Hoosier, who has only been blessed to visit the Lowcountry for 3 short 2-3 day visits, discovering your books at my local Barnes & Noble last fall was a fabulous gift. Your voice in your amazing women narrators is great humor, life-lesson revealing, and just plain fun at the end of a dark Indiana winter day. The only thing better would be to read them on the beach, alongside the sea grass, listening to the ocean breeze. I share them, I rave about them, and I appreciate your labor of love. And I can't wait to return to the area to explore more of what you have shown me. Thank you from the bottom of my warm heart and cold toes. And like others, no pressure, but I've finished them all.

My heart skipped a beat when I was in my grocery store several years back and I saw a book entitled Pawleys Island. My parents took me there as a child, and I have been on and off in my adult life.
I am arrogantly shabby and proud of a slowly seeping secret, ie. Pawleys
Long story short picked up the book, finally finished it, found anew book in hard cover and I have been hooked.
You can bring that special place to me when it is a cold dreary winters day.
Thank you thank you thank you.

I recently discovered you this summer through my library. I "had" my favorite authors and read all their books and was looking for something new and different. The wonderful woman that works at my library suggested you.
I live in VT near Lake Champlain and grew up near the water, but the ocean has always called to me. I fell in love with "The Land of Mango Sunsets" and was forever hooked with the Sullivan's Island books.
I just finished "Full of Grace" and felt moved. My son is a Marine and stationed in Jacksonville, NC and I can't wait to visit him in May. Whether he wants to come with me or not, I want to visit the islands off SC. Even if it's just a drive thru! You wrote about the area that is in your heart and I want to see it for myself. Whenever I need to relax and "go to the beach", I only have to pick up one of your books. I am a fan for life and hope you will continue to write for many, many years to come--I cannot think of another author that has made me laugh out loud and picture these scenes also--and of course being a Carolina Girl--what could possibly be better than the SC coast, Shem Creek, and being able to go to either one by just reading your books. You are truly a very gifted author and if any of Ya'll havent read her books, well bless your heart because you dont know what you are missin'! If you ever want to become so engrossed in a book that you can actually picture the characters, scenary, music, and almost taste the food--please read ALL of Mrs. Benton Franks books--and if you dont like them--well we southern women will just bless your heart until you learn better!

I have read three of your books so far and just love them. I am reading "Sullivan's Island" and it is the perfect timing for me. I recently went through (and am still working through) a tough break up and find what the main character Susan is going through comforting. My breakup was not to the extreme of what she experienced but reading about her working through the experience, pain, confusion, and starting over has been a true help and I have written down quotes from the book and refer to them often. I love how you write about the ocean and how it is often a metaphor for life...I have always had a deep love for the beach and the connection makes sense through your words. I just wanted to say thank you for your frank and honest style of writing...reading your book at this time in my life has brought some humor and some "guidance" back to my life!!! II will continue to read your books and recommend them to others.

Just read Folly Beach. I found it right after finishing a chapter in our family history which my neice and I are writing. My chapter dealt with Porgy and some of the remembrances of my mother and her siblings who were youths at the time the real Porgy was roaming the streets. I love reading books written about Charleston by someone who really understands the persona and the attitudes of the Charleston native. Especially the women. I had reccommended your Sullivan's Island to my neices in order that they would more fully understand their mother. Anyone who has not lived there would never understand the driving forces behind these women. We are a strong breed. I often wish I had not left that wonderful city I still call home after 56 years in Ohio. My family was deeply rooted there. Ancestors included John Devereux the architect of the Post Office, Fireproof Bldg and St. Matthews Church. Oh! I also liked the fried chicken at the Magic Lantern.

THANK YOU for the fantastic and amazing Coming Up for Air. The insights and thought-provoking passages steadied me. All your books are grand, and this one is just as comforting and humorous. The main characters are dream-worthy and lust-worthy, like the lifeguard I fell for in high school, whose mom broke up our romance. He's still amazing; we met 10 yrs. later at the same beach. I also tingled near him. So good to be reassured that that kind of love, maybe all first love, really is experienced like that and not wishful thinking of an older woman. Bless you!

Dear Ms. Dorothea, I have just finished Plantation, what a Wonderful story!! I am already missing Miss Lavinia & Millie. For me I had an Aunt Millie, a Grandmother I cherished and called "Honey" and my Lavinia was the wonderful woman that touched all our lives in so many loving ways. The only photo I have of Lavinia was taken just as she finished dressing me and I was about 6 months old.
Thank you so very much for helping to dig back into my Childhood & remember thing a though was long forgotten!
I have also read Sillivan Island & Return to Sullivan Island. I must say I loved this one the most!!
Now on to more of your wondreful works.

I've introduced your books to many, many friends and to anyone else who mentions a love of reading. Thanks! and keep on writing.

My English teacher had been a student of DuBose Heyward at Porter Military Academy. I was his student in the early 1950's, and I regret not trying to find out more about Mr. Heyward (and his wife) during those years. It is forever a sad thing that for many years "Porgy and Bess" could not be performed in Charleston. Your "Folly Beach" will remind us Charlestonians of our meanness. Thanks for the book. I enjoyed it. I need to visit the Porgy House. I hope it is not a part of fiction!

Just finished Folly Beach! What a great read - I wanted to stop all the busy-ness of life and escape to Folly Beach as often as possible. With a grown son living in the upstate, and several friends in the lowcountry, I can honestly say that your books have transported me to SC so often that I am ready to relocate! Enough of all these cold, gray, wet days! PLEASE keep writing and fast! Can't wait for the next story! Many thanks again for some great reads-at the beach; at home in front of the fire; and even listening on disc while driving back and forth to SC. Hope to meet up with you on your next Tour!

Folly Beach is truly a delight! Our daughter lives on James Island and, as you know, is only 15 minutes from Folly!
Over the years, we've spend many summer afternoons making memories with her and our 2 amazing grandsons on the beach at Folly! God has truly given you a special gift of writing some great stories set in our LowCountry! I have just one question for you....Why on earth do you live in NY when you could live here in this truly magical place we call Charleston? If it were at all possible that's where I'd love to live. But, until then, we'll just keep on visiting! God's continued blessings to you as you continue writing your wonderful books!

I just finished reading "Folly Beach" and I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. The characters, the setting, the humor, how the entire story came forth, was just mesmerizing. I have read many of your other books, and they each bring their own unique story and grace to the reader. Wishing you much success in all you do and looking forward to your next story.

Man o man, where to start / Moving from Atlanta to MB just 4 years ago was a wild ride. My husband is from South Carolina and Pawley's Island was one of our first trips together. Got the bug and vacationed from Atlanta every summer thereafter (26 years). I knew that we would ultimately retire to the SC coast. Well, I did, he didn't. We are importing the component parts for one of the natural gas cars that you will soon see zipping around. After the launch (in January, we hope) I hope that we will be moving south of MB. Too commercial here. I decided that your books might give me geographic information on the different areas of The Grand Strand and, sure enough, they have. I poke around in all the smaller communities and just celebrated my birthday (you would not dare ask which one, now would you?) at Shem's Creek. One of my daughters drove up from Georgia Southern University and the other rode there from MB with my husband and me. Perfect weather, perfect place. I love how you research the facts for your books and how you develop characters. Not kinda love it, but REALLY love it. Only 2 or 3 left to read, so please write more. Actually, I hope that you and your family are gonna get on back here. You may just be my new BFF. See how our children keep us young and cool? I am also going to begin writing children's books (funny with a little moral lesson in each one since I believe that children are surrounded by so much garbage these days). I hope to morphe to fiction ultimately. And you, Mrs. Frank are my inspiration!! I was in the real estate business for over 30 years (unuhh, I'm still not disclosing age since I look so young :-). The writing should take me into real retirement as I figure I can do that from "the home" at some point. So, if I am going to "re-invent" myself for the Golden Years, I want my new career to see me through to the hereafter (yes, I plan to participate in that, too!). So, keep writing and I look forward to many more.

I just finished reading Plantation last night...stayed up until 1 a.m. because I couldn't wait to finish it. You are such a good writer. I loved how you "framed" the story with the demise of Miss Lavinia in the beginning and the ending. I thoroughly loved Caroline, although I was frustrated with her taking so long to figure out Richard was NOT worthy of her. You make your characters so real to me! I just wanted to call Caroline up and say, "You deserve better than Richard! How can you NOT have kicked him to the curb when he was with Lois while Eric was born?" She showed great restraint, that gal. I also loved the setting. I wanted to go there. It sounds SO beautiful! I do love the South. Maybe in retirement we can live in the South. The beauty of all the flowers makes me desire to live there. We are about to enter the long, gray episode in Indiana called winter. It starts in the fall and seems to last forever. You have a great day! Looking forward to the next book on my list.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your book Pawleys Island. Pawleys was a place of healing for me after my husband died. That has been 16 years ago now but sometime it's just like it was yesterday. Pawleys was truely a place where I went to figure things out & make sense of my life. Sitting on that beach alone for the first time in my life after 25 years of marriage. Dear Dottie,
I couldn't wait for your next book and this summer's Folly Beach was the best yet. I had picked up an old copy of Porgy at a junk store copyright 1925 but the owner's name written in it was a Rebecca B. Moore, Charleston 1938. Inside was an obituary from a newspaper regarding Heyward's death here in Tryon. Didn't even know the significance until I read your book. Again it was one if not your best yet! Just finished your book "The Land of Mango Sunsets" and have begun listening to "Folly Beach" on Audio in my car. Mango Sunsets was a God send. Being the mother of two growns sons myself, it spoke to me in many ways. It caused me to take a look at myself as their mother in a different season of life. New,different and sometimes a hard place to find my fit. I began reading the book while vacationing in North Myrtle Beach. We had spent time in Summerville when my boys were small and visited Charleston. This year when we returned to North Myrtle, we took a day and drove to Charleston and took a historical carriage ride, ate in a wonderful Italian restuarant and had gelato down at the harbor in the late afternoon and watched the dolphins frolic. We drove over to Sullivans Island and then onto Isle of Plams and walked the beach at dusk. I am in love the area.
Last year I went to Hopsewee Plantation and did a sea grass basket lesson with a wonderful lady there. Thank you for writing about things I can relate to. I don't want to read about Vampires, even if it is a "love story" or any juvenile magicians. Real life is much more interesting. Thank you, I could hardly put the book down. I will be checking all of your books out in the near future. Michele

I just read FOLLY BEACH and enjoyed it very much. I have loved George Gershwin`s music for a long time and just this week was his birthday. The radio announcer I was listening to mentioned the same things you did in your book- how he had terrible headaches and smelled burned plastic. It was nice to get a little history with my reading!
I do have a question about the bottom of page 165 and beginning of page 166. I don't understand why the text goes into conversation mode. It could be that Cate is quoting Dorothy's writing, but then who is responding to her ? Or is it Cate speaking to the museum curator? I just kept re-reading it to make sense of it but couldn't. Anyway, I enjoyed the book and learning about the Lowcountry and Dorothy Heyward.

Although I have not read 'Folly Beach' yet, my son in law, Michael, & daughter, April were married there on 9-10-11. After having gone through a serious health condition in the past year I was just so relieved I was able to be there. My friend Sarah introduced me first to Sweet Grass Baskets several years ago(I could still smell the scent), as she had visited the Low Coutry as a child, and then to your Novels. Having never been to the Ocean myself, as planned months ago between my daughter & I, we spent my first day not only going to Mt. Pleasant so I could buy Sarah & I each a basket but as importantly, so I could meet the beautiful women who make them. They must have thought me nuts I was so excited, yet they allowed me to sit with them, explaining how the baskets were made & allowed us to take a few pictures. It was pure joy! Next, and again as planned, because this is where I wanted to meet the Ocean for the first time, my daughter took me to The Isle of Palms. It was mesmermizing! The smell, the sound of the waves. Even though I did not have my suit with me I dove in fully clothed! Thank you for gifting all of us readers with stories that make us feel as if we were there. My mind's eye was prepared for the Isle of Palms because of your book with the same title. I have two favorite authors and you are one of them! God bless you! Denae

I came across your book 'Isle of Palms' at an RV book exchange and picked it up because of the title. We'd lived in Summerville for 3 years but (unfortunately) had to move back to Ohio for family concerns. As I'm truly in love with the Low Country and the beaches and consider it more of a home than Ohio (in spite of being up here my whole life!)I just had to read something relating to it. It was love at first read!!! I've since read many more of your books and continue to read them as fast as I can. I even bought one (Sullivan's Island) which I donated to our local library after reading as they didn't have a copy and I couldn't read 'Return to Sullivan's Island' without reading it first. As I read, I can imagine myself there and feel the ocean breezes and the warm ocean waters as I wade through the surf...... aren't SC beaches the ABSOLUTE BEST!!! Thank you for giving me, and all your readers, the chance to live in the Low Country, if only through the pages of your wonderful stories!

I wrote to you just over a week ago to say my daughter had given me "Folly Beach" and I had only read a small portion. Well, I've now finished, and it has, indeed, made me homesick for Folly Beach and James Island, where I was raised.

In your narration all the characters either live on Folly Beach or are anxious to return. I can certainly understand that. I married a Citadel man who made the Army his career. He had grown up in Kentucky, but Folly Beach certainly had a lure for him. After traveling with the military for 24 years, we settled down in the Columbia area. Still I missed my beaches, and we frequently went back for summer vacations. Our son has never left the state, but our 2 daughters married "foreigners" and lived in the north for a while. Now, as in "Folly Beach", they have returned to SC, and nine of my ten grandchildren also live in the state. We may not reside on any beach, but we're only a couple hours aways from them and we visit them as often as possible.

I was amazed to read that you and your family live in "the north", but then I found that you divide your time. That made me feel better: how could anyone who grew up on Sullivan's and who writes with such longing for Folly Beach, live year round so far away? I'm just teasing you, of course, but you must admit that living on the coast gets into your blood. If it weren't for the hurricanes, I'd live there even now.

Thanks again for all your wonderful books. You make me feel as if I know your characters - and better yet, as if I know you. Keep up the good work.

Just returned from the low country today after spending a week down there. Spent a day in Charleston. Took a carriage ride and saw a few places you mention in "Folly Beach". I finished reading the book today on the return trip to Ohio. Interesting how you interspersed the play between the chapters about Cate and family. Your books take me back to the place I love. I saw the signs along the road leading to Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Pawleys Island and Sullivan's Island. Yes I also saw some selling the sweetgrass baskets along Highway 17. What do you think about there being SO many similarities between THE HELP, the hot book now, and your Sullivan's Island written quiet a few years ago?

Your books are so wonderful. I have read all but two of them now. I read your books on audiobooks. I really enjoyed reading Pawley's Island on Ipod because YOU read it. Your paid story tellers do a wonderful job but your voice brings the book to life! Thank you for writing your stories. Being born and raised in the SC LowCountry, it brings a smile to may heart to hear the passionate way you describe this magical place we live.

Oh Dorthea, I Am REALLY Going to the low country..my husband and I are driving our daughter's car to Beaufort where she is stationed as a Marine. We are turning it into one of my dreams..since I'm always reading about he area in your books - We are going to Follys Beach next week- renting a lower level of a house across the street from the beach. Just looking at the place made me feel that descriptive feeling of relaxation you write about! I'm reading Folly Beach and enjoying (taking my time so I can enjoy longer) - and I'm so looking forward to being there. Also we'll be taking in some history of Charleston, eating that great southern food- She Crab Soup- Shrimp & Grits particularly.
I enjoy all your books & have contacted you in the past ... with who could play what part in a movie & with questions such as "Want a beach house...could a Yankee survive if she's a Island girl at heart?". I think you do a great contribution to the area travel with your descriptive writing and love for your Southern home. Keep on writing, Anne Chard

I've introduced your books to my significant other (we're 70), and he's hooked, too. He said he'd love to visit Sullivan's Island, and I mentioned I'd noticed on your website that the Island Gamble is available for vacation rentals. Now I can't find any mention of that! Did I dream it? We're looking for a honeymoon destination for next year, God willing!

Bravo, Dot! I knew from your comments at the author's luncheon in Greenville SC that Folly Beach was going to be a departure for you as an author, and I want you to know that I throughly enjoyed it. You did a wonderful job weaving past and present into a contemporary novel about our beloved low country, and a fascinating couple, Dubose and Dorothy Heyward. I am now intrigued and want to read more about them. Haven't found much yet, but I am still looking. I so enjoyed meeting you, and I thank you for capturing why the low country and its diverse people are so special!

I am the daughter of Leonard Douty, who bought the Magic Lantern from Mr. Benton in the 40's....and the "80 year old" mother of Barb. She has shared the correspondance she's had with your family and has copied that picture of the restaurant for me. That does bring back all sorts of memories. I worked in the kitchen, as a waitress, and even managed it all on days my parents were out of town. I have one favorite story, involving a host of Citadel cadets who came in for an evening meal, if you'd ever be interested in hearing about it. I was 18 or 19 - very impressed by the cadets and their uniforms - yet having to act as the adult. Makes me smile to think about it.

I've read and thoroughly enjoyed several of your books, and Barb has just given me "Folly Beach." I love reading about all those old Charleston families. You truly bring them to life for me. And the sound of the waves when I opened your guest book makes me want to be a teen again and back at Folly Beach. Keep on writing so we dis-placed Charlestonians can have a bit of home wherever we are.

Dear Dorothea, it was great meeting you and wonderful coincidence that our ways have passed on a sunny day back in Italy!!! Combined - with general strike of public transportation and a GPS that did not want to take you to the Airport.
But you made it!! Have a wonderful Birthday - the world needs more charismatic women like you.It was wonderful talking and meeting you!!

Hi Dottie,
How are you? We met at Borders in Sacramento, CA this past July (I was with my friend, Pam from Montclaire, NJ.) I really enjoyed meeting you and loved listening to your presentation. I'm almost finished with Folly Beach and already anticipating your next book!
I'm writing also to let you know that my book club is meeting Sept. 22. We will be discussing "Plantation" and I know all the Ladies are looking forward to it. Just wondering if you have any suggestions to guide our discussion AND recommendations for some good, Southern "eats!"

Cheers,

My friend advised me to read some of your books. I'd like to know if they are in some sort of series?
It's always more interesting to read the first book. Notice that there are several on Sullivan's Island. \\
Would appreciate a reply. Thank you.

Dot: I just got through reading Return to Sullivan s Island. We ve gotten sand in our shoes a couple of times down there. The ghost and spiritual thing kind of smacked me upside the head. Well, Charleston is noted for haints. Poogan s Porch and the Dock Street Theatre come to mind. Anyway, June 2, 2009 is a date my wife Julie and I can t forget. We had been in Charleston for the Spoleto Festival. After the rest of our group left for home, we headed for Beaufort and Savannah. Going down US 17, on our way to the Sheldon Church ruins, we stopped at the Carolina Cider Company. A woman came in, and said her husband had collapsed outside, and wasn t breathing. We ran out of the store.

Julie and some guy managed to get him down on the ground. His face was already a nasty shade of purple. One gentleman was down by the guy s left side and said had no pulse. I started chest compressions the only way I could, with my butt right over his face. All I could remember from TV was the BeeGees Stayin Alive. 100 beats per minute. I don t know how long I pumped, but all of a sudden he let out a big whoop, and then another. Right then, someone said they had eye contact with him and I could stop. Someone was a retired firefighter. Shortly after, we headed for the Sheldon Ruins. Julie asked why the guy s son hadn t helped. I said He only had one arm." We did the church ruins, very ooh eee ooh, and got into Beaufort. We stopped at a little bookstore and told them the story. Apparently you ve been to that same bookstore. We celebrated a really freaky day with dinner at Saltus.

I emailed the Cider Company later and found out the guy had had a heart attack, and had two stents put in his heart.

I have been reading your books for years. You are one of my favorite authors. I love the lowcountry, and visit it at least once a year. Visiting Pawley's Island sometime before 2011 is over. I've been in the media for several years (newspapers and radio). You are an inspiration! Thank you for sharing yourself.

Just finished Return to Sullivan's Island and it was wonderful! I am 54 years old and spent many summer vacations on Sullivan's Island. My great uncle, Dean Ussery, was the pastor of Sullivan's Island Baptist Church when I was a child. Hen hsi wife Esma and my cousins, 3 boys and 1 girl, lived in a wonderful 2 story parsonage across from the church towards the channel. What wonderful memories I have of my parents taking me and my sister there for vacation and even leaving us behind to spend a couple of weeks with my cousins. My aunt would take us to the beach every day and we slept in chairs at night on the big upstairs porch. Your books take me back in time and I enjoy every story you write. Thanks for your talent!

I have just recently discovered your books and I can't put them down. I have grown up vacationing in the lowcountry since I was a kid and when I read you books I feel like I'm there! I just got back from Mount Pleasant and I had a wonderful time reading Sullivan's Island while sitting on the porch of Poe's Tavern. The place is truly magical and I can't wait to return. Thank you so much for these books, can't wait to start the next one!

Well Dottie, I finally got my hands on Folly Beach last week while sitting under an umbrella at Garden City Beach. This thing has made the rounds and sure enough it got around to me after too long a wait. Just finished it this afternoon in my oak rocker on our back porch while Jingles, our cat, slalomed in and out of my legs hinting for a rub. Her impatient mewing didn't sway me. I was mesmerized by your tale. Jingles would just have to wait.
Back to the book. I must admit I was a bit annoyed at first with the alternating play, novel, play, novel, play, novel routine. But I finally "got it" and hit my stride.
What a wonderfully enlightening lesson in lowcountry history blended with a superb work of fiction. Another great read from the sweetheart of Sullivan's Island. By the way, I noticed that you worked a mango sunset in there. And then there was a reference to your pal Susan Rosen. She gets a fair amount of air time in your stories.:) (Note: New readers should be aware Dottie's characters sometime find their way from one story to another. Some are real, some are not. It's up to you to figure out which is which.)
I have to tell you that one of my favorite parts of the book was from the Author's Note when you drew parallels between yourself and Dorothy Heyward. Someone walked across my grave as I read that and although I don't believe in reincarnation it would make a great story if Heyward had died before you were born. But she passed in 1961 and everybody knows you were born in...well, maybe everybody doesn't know, but it was before Heyward died.
Thanks again for many hours of enjoyable reading. And I do mean many. You know me. I just can't race through your yarns in one sitting. I take my time and savor each line, like an Oak Steak House fillet. As Casey Kasem used to say, the hits just keep on comin'. And Patty says hi.
