Dorothea, in the last 4 days I have read my first 2 DBF books.....and I absolutely loved them. A friend had told me about 2 years ago that I would love your books but I just never got around to any of them. Then this past week another friend loaned me 2 of hers....she has several. Now I am definitely hooked. I am a southern girl (GA) but love Charleston and any place at the beach or water's edge. You are a phenomenal writer and I look forward to reading ALL of your books.

Dear Dorothea Benton Frank, I am writing to tell you how much I love your books, all of them! I first got acquainted with you a year ago through your writings and have purchased every book you have written including your latest, Bulls Island. There is nothing about any of them that didn't hold me spellbound, not wanting to put them down and not having the discipline to do so until I just became too tired to keep my eyes open. At that point I made myself read only a portion each day to make them last longer. I have laughed, cried, been surprised, learned , enjoyed the southern food descriptions, gotten so interested in the quaint sayings, loved the characters, and more. Last Summer my husband and I celebrated our 50 th Wedding Anniversary by taking a ten day trip to Charleston, Hilton Head Island, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Mt. Pleasant, Magnolia Plantation, Savannah, and St. Augustine. Familiar territory to you and inspired by your books! We decided it was our best trip ever! We even had lunch at Poe's Tavern. Your descriptions of those places and the city tours we took, and our time on the beaches were wonderful. We loved the Southern cooking and great Restaurants and Savannah was one of our favorite places. Of all of your books my favorite has to be Plantation, which I just finished reading for the third time! I loved Millie, Caroline, Trip, Frances Mae and her brood, and all great characters and how you brought each one to light. Miss Lavinia had to be the strongest and funniest of all, and Sweetie and Miss Nancy were the best. I could go on and on, but after all this is an e-mail! I have loved the writings of Ann Siddons, also, but have never before felt compelled to write to an Author.. Please keep on writing and I will keep on reading your works. I have also loaned your books out to two of my "girlfriends" who think they love them as much as I do ha! Thank you for your excellent stories and your special gift of humor and compassion, and understanding of women and different ages of people and for your sensitivity in everything you write. I understand you deep roots better now that we have visited your South. Count me as one of your biggest fans, from the Midwest part of our country, who also is an avid reader and lover of great fiction interlaced with fact. Jill Banghart, Omaha, NE 68154

Just finished Plantation. I can't begin to tell you how timely this novel was for me. Lost my mom the end of 2006 and, somehow, so many memories seem to freeze in time. This particular story line beautifully developed the theme of how similar we all are to our life connect - our moms. Hi! I was wondering when you would be doing another book signing in Mt. Pleasant or the surrounding Charleston area. My mother and I have bonded over your books, and I recently bought her "Bulls Island." She lives in Indianapolis, IN, and can't find the new books as quickly as I can here. It has become tradition that I buy her the new book as soon as it is released. We have every copy! We both love your work, and are anxious to see you at a book signing. My mother is coming to Charleston this summer to visit her only grandchild (my daughter), and maybe me while she's here...haha! We would love a chance to see you in person, as your books have tightened our bond. Thank you so much! April W.

You mentioned stories about Folly - did you see Charleston Stage's production of "Gershwin at Folly" last year? Fantastic musical by Artistic Director Julian Wiles, whose research about the summer George Gershwin spent with the Dubose Haywards as they wrote "Porgy and Bess" - absolutely wonderful! I feel the pain!! Was this a true story? Anyhow now remarried I have been home with an illness that has kept me out of work for over 3 weeks now something I am not used to, I have read your book and was laughing out loud!!! It cheered me up the part with the Cosmopolitans!!! The same thing happended to me even the passing out in the bathroom for over an hour and the waitress came in for me also along with my future husband,brother-in-law and sister-in-law!! What a sight those cosmos will kill you!! Anyhow I really enjoyed the book (totally, to coin a phrase from Emily!!). Thank you.

My husband and I attended your presentation last night in Wilmington MA. What an experience to meet the author of books I adore. Have read them all - except for Plantation" which I bought yesterday. I had already read "Bulls Island" and thought it was one of your best. I discovered you about five years ago when I wore a T-shirt to the library with all the islands off of Charleston listed. We had stayed several times at a friend's townhouse on Kiawha Island. The Librarian said "Oh, those are real places? Did you know that there is a woman who writes about those islands?" That was all it took - I was off and running. Thoroughly enjoyed every book. Looking forward to your next one. My husband keeps asking if I thought he'd like them. So you may (or may not) have another fan. I somehow think they are more geared towards women (relationships and terrific dialog).

Dot, Let me know what kind of stories you may be interested in regarding Folly Beach --haunted by dead Yankee soldiers --the serial killer that lived there in the 1970's -- Folly's recent facelift, etc. I've got lots of neighbors who remember misspending their youth in Folly. I'm finally relocating there from the Jersey Shore in early June. To refresh your memory, we met late last summer at that event at Tim McLoone's in Sea Bright. I was there with all my snooty friends that have places in Kiawha. I'd love to help if I can. Karen Larrison

Dear Mrs. Frank, I am a military child and I'm thirteen years old, and I was recommended your books by my mom. Ever since then, I have searched the libraries and stores for another one of your books to read! My family used to visit Charleston when I was younger, and ever since then, I have loved to call Charleston one of my favorite places in the world. It's fun to read about the places I've been in your books and think back on the memories. I have great memories everywhere in Charleston, from watching women sew sweet grass baskets to playing with my sister on Folly Beach. I miss visiting Charleston, but when reading your books, I am completely honest when I say that your books make me remember of the great times with my family in the Lowcountry and I hope one day to be a writer, too. Your characters in your books come to life and I think you have a great gift for writing. I look forward to read more of your books! Also, do you have an address on your website so I could write to you? (If anyone has this address, could they blog it in the Guestbook for me?)You may be a very busy author and may not have time to read this, but I just wanted to express my thanks for the many fantastic books of yours!

Well Dot, The Land of the Mango Sunsets made me laugh out loud at the airport, made me cry buckets at the end and schedule a trip home to Atlanta to see my Mother. I've been putting it off, I know she is dying. I can stand having my hair color scrutinized and the subsequent tisk that is sure to follow for the woman who taught me how to grow tomatos. It was a gut punch but it started with a call from my Sister. "Guess what just came into paperback!" So how do I repay her? I'll beat her down there, steal her brownie points for showing up first. Dear Ms. Frank: I was born in the South (Albany, GA), but raised in Upstate New York. So half my family are Yankees, but the other half are the boiled peanut Southern kind. I first read Plantation and have faithfully followed each release since then. I go out and purchase each one as they come out because I love to re-visit them from time to time as they have become old friends. And, because of you, I feel like I have a working knowledge of how Charleston and the surrounding islands are laid out, so when I read books from other authors, I think "Oh yeah, that's one of the scenes from what you wrote about!". Not only are your books rich with local lore, but there are heartwarming as well and whenever I read one, I can hear one of my relatives speaking what you are writing. They allow me to live Southern all year long, not just when I return to my Southern roots once a year on vacation. Please keep up the good work, I look forward to reading anything you have to write. I love your sense of humor as well. Can't wait to read the next one!

Ms. Frank - I have LOVED all your books. As a military wife, I have traveled around the world with them, and they have taken me back to my favorite spot in the world, the Low Country and the Coastal Empire. I will say, however, that Shem Creek is my favorite of your books. As someone who has traveled so much over the years, something about the story of Linda finding her way home again has much appeal for me, and I have read the book at least half a dozen times. Not to mention I love the way you write and your humor and feel like I am hanging out with a friend at each turn of the page. Just returned from Naples after spending the winter there and picked up Bulls Island which was on reserve at our local library - it looks great. I notice in your introduction you thank your South Carolina author friends. Earlier this month I had the pleasure of hearing Mary Alice Monroe speak at the Naples Hilton - she was wonderful. I have also heard Sue Monk Kidd. They both were presented by the Friends of the Collier County Library. I have suggested your name as a possibility some year! We are always in such a hurry either to get to our villa in Naples or to our CT home that we never stop at any of the islands off the coast of South Carolina or Georgia on our treks! They must be beautiful and some day we will spend a few days there. Enjoyed the video of your gorgeous Sullivans Island home - the Naples beaches are lovely, too. Take good care, enjoy your success, and keep those books coming! Have read them all.

Thanks for the opportunity to lose myself into your books and forget about the rest of the world. Karen

Dottie, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your books. I grew up on the Isle of Palms and I read everything you write. I now live in Virginia with my husband and three small little girls. Reading your books take me back to my own childhood. I just finished The Land of Mango Sunsets and loved it (as usual). However, this book touched my heart so much. About a year and a half ago, my mother passed away. She had lived on the Isle of Palms for 40 years. About a year before she died I moved her here to my house in Virginia so that I could take care of her. I watched her health decline slowly and was able to keep her here with us. She died peacefully here at my home with the help of hospice. Reading your book touched me so much because it was so real and so much like the time I had with my mother. I would never have changed a moment of it. Thank you so much for your books. They are a wonderful escape and a great way to relive all my childhood memories. Please take care and God Bless you and your family. Mary Flowers Fredericksburg, Va

dear miz dottie, i stayed up all night reading "bull's island" and having done so, i just don't know what you could have named it other than you did. there are two problems with your books: they end. and we have to wait almost a year for another. *sighs* but i expect your husband, children, family and friends expect to see you from time to time, which trumps readers' greed. i rescued a new cat that i named "pearl" in honor of "the christmas pearl". she was born around christmas, is a soft grey with lil white socks. the fur just above her nose lightens to an iridescent pearl-like color...hence her name. she's very loving with a streak of hellion running through her. thank you for the addition of the waves to the website; when i was a lil girl visiting my gramma, i used to fall asleep on a sofa in her florida room, the jalousy windows opened to the sound of the ft. lauderdale surf. so now i just click on your website before bed! i shared "mango" with a gf of mine, and now she's hooked; i so love your books that i also put a link to your website on my blog; my blogging friends are all inveterate readers and i enjoy being responsible for introducing your work to someone new. dbf's newest publication is a yearly event for me, and i so enjoyed this year's offering. take care, stay well and please write fastest! hugs, laura

I'm so glad you're going to write about Folly Beach. My daughter attended College of Charleston, she graduated in 2007. We've been vacationing on Folly since 2004 and hope to move to the Charleston area in about 6 years. We love the city of Charleston and Folly - the people, the food, and the beach. I love reading your books especially when I recognize the different places you mention. I finished "Bull Island" before we left for Folly, I was going to save it for the trip, but I couldn't wait. Thanks for the wonderful stories, I look forward to your next! Tricia H

Just heard you speak today at our local library, I was so excited when I saw you were coming I e-mailed my mother-in-law right away to ask her to babysit my two year old twin boys so I could see you and hear about your newest novel. Your books are such a refreshing, uplifting read They are beautiful, fun and descriptive tales of Lowcountry life and the elegance and charm of Charleston, the city I lost my heart too the first time my family visited 20 years ago. Everytime I go back it feels like home to me, I think I must have lived there in another life. So reading your books brings back so many memories of all my visits and allows me to live the Southern life vicariously through your characters. Each time you release a new novel I am so excited to read it and then wait eagerly for another. Thank you for sharing your gift of Lowcountry storytelling with your readers.

Dear Ms. Frank: I wanted to tell you that I love all your books!! I have collected and read all of them. They are so wonderful and I look forward to each and every one that you write. I have never had the privilege of visiting SC but that is someplace that I would love to live. I keep telling my husband that he needs to ask for a transfer to that part of the country!!! I love all your books. They remind me growing up in this wonderful Lowcountry. The Christmas Pearl reminded me of my Grandmother and the way I was raised. I am looking forward to "Folly Beach". I lived on Folly Beach in the 50's as a little girl. My parents owned 2 houses and a lot. My Mother would let me sleep on the screen porch during the Summer (after hours of begging!). I can remember the sounds of the waves putting me to sleep but then being awakened by the buzzing sound of a MOSQUITO which made his way to my young skin through the small holes of the screen (that is why Mother did not like me sleeping outside on the porch. Folly Beach had its own carnival and I remember playing on all the rides and watch my Mother dance at the local dance bar on the beach. What wonderful memories!! Keep writing! Susan

I have read all of your books except for The Christmas Pearl, and hope to get to that one ASAP! I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed everything I've read, and have waited on bated breath until the next one comes out each time I read one. I just finished Land of Mango Sunsets, and I have to say that I think this is your best book to date. I laughed until I cried in parts, and would have embarrassed myself totally if I'd been in a public place! At the same time, I cried openly also, and I found myself caring so much about these characters that I felt as if they were personal friends. I fell in love with the lowcountry with your first book, and when I visited it for the first time not long after reading it, I could see where your inspiration comes from. I go back often to visit friends there on Edisto Island, and always hate to leave. It is truly a place where one feels renewed in spirit. Thank you so much for the pleasure you give us with your writing, and for the years you add to our lives with the laughter!

I grew up as a tourist of Sullivan's Island/Isle of Palms. Every year for spring break we would rent a beach house with my dad's side of the family (usually 13+ people). I loved every minute of those vacations. The Islands had something to do with that joy. Reading your Sullivan's Island I got chills in the first 20 pages. Your words brought me right back to my favorite vacation spot. I absolutley loved this novel! I am looking forward to reading your other novels, I bought 4 of them today. Thank you for sharing your wonderful tales. After four years I am returning to the Isle of Palms for a summer get together with the family (20 of us). The only book of yours that I haven't read or I should say finished is The Land of Mango Sunsets; I just couldn't get into it and put it away. Maybe I should get it out and try again since I see such great reviews of it on Barnes & Noble! I hope that someday you write a book about Hilton Head Island; I have met people who lived here since the 70's and 80's and listening to them talk about how it was makes me regret I didn't get here sooner, before it became what it is now. Just finished "bulls". My summer is now ready to begin. Just returned from a great weekend in Charleston/Mt. Pleasant. Spent two hours driving around Sullivan's Island at dusk on Saturday. My poor husband's arm is still black and blue from me pummeling it in excitment..."oh my gosh, there's Stella Mara Church, there's the fire department, there's Fort Moltre, slow down, I want to get a good look. Oh, just pull over and let me out, I'll meet you back here in an hour! And this was not my first visit! As you might guess, Sullivan's Island was and is my favorite. What a great place is must have been to grow up. It still has the feeling of a time past, when we were a more innocent country and not so caught up in the world. Would love a sequel. Plantation is a very close second. Don't you think Sandra Bullock would be great in the lead? Maybe she would produce. Thank you so much for showing us southern girls as we really are and not either "aging cheerleaders, snobs with no brains, or somebody in rollers who just saw a UFO." You validate who we are and its so easy to identify with your books as every one echoes whats going on in my own life. Scary. I wish I could be a turtle lady, but I do my best saving box turtles on the highway and bringing them to our place in the country. Just want to thank you for being willing to sign a copy of Bulls Island last night even though I could not stand in line to meet you personally. One of my best buddies is taking care of her Mom who is dying with ALS and we go visit most Monday nights. We trade our favorite books back and forth so I wanted to take her a signed copy of your lastest as a surprise but had to choose between getting to meet you myself and going for our weekly visit. Please don't take it personally that I decided the visit was more important than my standing in line. I greatly appreciate your willingness to sign a book for an unseen person. I can't wait to deliver it to Gennie and then get to borrow it for another great read! Thanks for keeping us entertained! Sincerely yours, Ruth

Hey Dot: I just read Bulls Island while at the NC Crystal Coast. What a great beach read!! My only problem with your books...can't put them down...it's like eating chips or drinking a Coca Cola with peanuts...you just can't help gulping it down as quickly as you can. Thanks again for a fun escape! I also find myself going back and reading all of them over again...hopelessly addicted to your books. Keep them coming!

Dottie: My husband and I were walking down Bay St. last night to go to Luther's for a few beers, Cosmos and dinner when we passed Bay St. Trading Co. and I saw Bulls Island. I almost had a hissy fit! I thought you had been there and I had missed you. When we got home, I rushed to your site and didn't see Beaufort listed. I hope that you haven't been here but are planning to be. I have met you several times in the Greenville/Spartanburg area before we moved to Beaufort last year which was a dream come true for us. I can't wait to read Bulls Island. The preview is great. I have been in real estate for over 10 years and have recently joined the sales staff of a developer in a gated upscale community so I know the book is going to be a hoot for me. I can certainly relate to Bett's statement that she has to work twice as hard because she is a woman because I am the only woman out of a 6 person sales staff but I love it! The guys don't get anything over on me and I hang tough with them. I once drove a Mercedes convertible and sat in model homes wearing Manolos and now I drive an all wheel drive BMW and go 4 wheeling when I show property. Love all of your books! Hope to see you soon. Ms.Frank: Wow! Your books have allowed me to return to my beloved lowcountry page after page. I can almost smell the rich salty marshs of the islands as the the Tams & the Drifters play that sweet Carolina music in my head. I'm looking forward to reading Bulls Island. Your books remind me of growing up on James Island and everything I love about the south. Yawl keep 'em coming now. Best wishes always. Karen Crosby

I had the great pleasure yesterday to meet you in person in Mt. Pleasant at your book signing for Bulls Island. My friend Kathryn was with me, and recently moved here from New Jersey and of course I had to turn her onto your books. She is hooked as I am, and wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your books. You told us about Station 26 how you can see the Milky Way and to go low tide or mid and that is on our list of things to do. Thanks so much for the most enjoyable reading and takes me away to the beach everytime to the point I get in the car and head over the bridge to the low country beaches!!!

Dear Dottie: Your books are SO enjoyable I have a difficult time putting them down! Thank you for creating such excellent characters I can relate to. Do you think at this point Jack Taylor deserves a story of his own since weve followed him from story to story? I cant wait to get my hand son BULLS ISLAND and am THRILLED that a sequel to Sullivans Island is underway! Also PLEASE PLEASE consider a sequel to Plantation. That was my #1 favorite. I just finished Bulls Island about 15 minutes ago and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it! As much as I wanted to make it last I just couldn't stop or even slow down. Loved all the liars and how they had messed things up and ultimately work things out. What a group of characters you created this time! I managed to get in on the chat on gather.com at the very, very last minute so even though I didn't get to personally "chat" I did get to read all of the conversation. I, too, want to know where all the movies are of your stories. Isn't Plantation supposed to be a movie at some point? If so, I can't wait to see the cast of characters for that one. Singing your praises in Virginia! Diane

I have just finished The Land of Mango Sunsets and tears are pouring down my face. It touched me so, especially the epilogue as I am almost at the 6 month mark after my own mother's death. (Unfortunately it falls on Mother's Day) I can relate directly to the feelings described in the Epiloge's first paragraph and your writing has given me hope that the sun will shine again. I will be able to remember my mother and smile without a flood of tears and almost unbearable pain following. (Earlier this week, I had actually looked up on the internet to see if I was going wacko and if it was normal to feel like this.) Thank you for the ending as well. It helped me to remember that ending is not the end when there is love...

Hey Miss Dottie! Spent the last two days lying in the sun on my deck with your Bulls Island in hand. I love your books, they are a hoot. As a Folly Beach resident for several years, and someone who vacationed here for 30 years prior to living here, please keep your story about Folly "TRUE" to Folly, meaning what it has always been about, not necessarily what it is today. Folly has always been very bohemian, not ritzy like some other islands nearby. I would love to see you use local humor, the old pier and the amusement park, shagging, the washout, etc. Ok, enough from me. LOVE ALL YOUR BOOKS, keep writing.

I just finished reading "Mango Sunsets"Another #1 for you. You made me so homesick I just got a ticket to fly into Chas.on May 15th.You mentioned Josephine Humphreys in your acknowledments.Well,we went to school together when Memminger Grammer school was brand new.I think she may have left and went to Ashley Hall.I know she doesn`t remember me but she was the prettiest gal in 3rd grade,Ms Hassell was our teacher. Boy, that gives my age away.
I can`t stay away from the pluff mud long. I`ve told my husband he could blingfold me but if he took me to Chas. at low tide I would know exactly where I was.
I actually miss the old roller coaster bridge.I took my kids over that bridge when they got their liscence and if they didn`t hit the curb they could drive my car! LOL
My hubby says I have one wall as a shrine to Chas. With beach pics and a giant poster with all the landmarks that Jeanie Drucker did. And of course my fav. Jim Booth.
I can`t make any suggestons for your new book since you do such a great job on your own.
Recently I grabbed a book that had Chas. in the title and was so disappointed, she couldn`t possibly ever lived there and was so disappointed.she could have at least mentioned the bell of St. Michaels or the 4 corners of law.
But Hunny Chile you are the real thing and love all you write and am looking forward to your new novel.

Dear Dorthea, I was introduced to your books about a year ago by the owner of a used bookstore I frequently go to. My first two books were, of course, Sullivan's Island and Plantation. I cannot tell you how deeply your stories touch me on so many different levels. Your honesty in creating your characters and the artful way you weave your stories makes you one of the few authors I will read. Each book I read I thought it was my favorite one until I finished all of them. I can honestly say that they are all my favorites. I have not purchased "Bulls Island" as yet, but will in the near future. Your books are so refreshing, funny, and a great escape from an otherwise routine day. Since I am a southern transplant from the "North", I am learning so much about Southern Traditions and the people around me. I hope you revisit Sullivan's Island as that is where this adventure began and I felt that you had so much more to tell. It was as if you let me peek in through a window but did not quite let me come in for dinner. I have passed these covered treasures on to other women, but made sure they were returned safely to me. I do hope you continue sharing your stories and helping us find the humor, hope, and romance in our everyday lives. In every book, you have written what I have felt in similar circumstances. You have given a voice to my feeling and emotions. How do you do that so effortlessly? You are truly a gifted writer. Keep us laughing and loving.

Just finished reading Land of Mango Sunsets. Your Sullivans Island books remind me of 25 years ago when I used to house-sit for Charles and Mary Wieters who had an old house on front beach several blocks down from the lighthouse. On that part of the island, the land actually "accumulated" rather than receded, so it was a far walk thru the dunes to the beach. Loved those spectacular sunsets! The house is gone now, replaced by a sleek beach home...never the same. I also have fond memories of spending my childhood summers at Folly Beach each year. Utterly shabby but wonderful. I remember most of the front beach houses had washed away during the 1950's, but I did manage to climb up into one of them with my friends one day and found an old piano! Nothing in the house but that old clunker. I swore, in my bed at night I could hear that thing play! Thanks for all the reading pleasure you have given me over the years. Hope you can make it again to the Happy Bookseller in Columbia!

Dorthea Benton Franks' books have been such a delight to read. I have read them all. Dorthea's books helped me get through a most trying time of my life--the loss of my love of a lifetime. Her humor and style of writing had me so entertained, I could never put her books down. I could get so lost in her stories that it became my escape from the pain I felt. I am a Virginian and found that it reminded me so much of the times I spent at the beach in Myrtle Beach and Pawley's Island. Truely those times were very happy and healing times for me. Dorthea Benton Franks has been the ONLY arthur that I have read all of her books, bought them for friends and family, and recommended so highly. Thank you so much, Dorthea, for being the writer that you are. Sarah Castle

Dot, I am very excited to read Bull's Island. I have all of your books and always look forward to the new ones. What do you think about "Back to Sullivan's Island", "Home to Sullivans Island - The Sequel", or "Revisiting Sullivan's Island".

I'm so happy to hear you are revisiting Sullivans Island. I can't wait to see how things are going with Susan and Simon. Also, is Maggie's perfect world still perfect? Hmmm... And no visit would be complete without Livee... Folly Beach sounds great, but when you're ready for a Tybee Island story - girl, I have characters that will knock your socks off! Truly fascinating people and I know it would make a great book! Take care and hope to see ya in Mt. Pleasant!

Dear Dorothea, I have just put down The Land of Mango Sunsets and I'm terribly sad there are no mor pages to read. I've never laughed so hard(love all that southern humor---I'm from Louisiana originally). My cat thinks I'm some kind of nutcase sitting in bed at night yowling louder than he does. I have read every one of your books and introduced many friends to them over the years. I have savored everyone of them and hope you never stop turning them out. Thanks for all the joy you have given me, Mimi Cochran

I just love your books and have every one that you have written. I am anxiously waiting for Bulls Island to hit Barnes and Noble! Anyway I have a story about Folly Beach, (since you did ask). As you no doubt know, a part of Folly Beach (at least back in the late 80's and early 90's) used to have a section of the beach that was known as the "Gay Beach". I used to love to go there along with other friends of mine who yes, were very very gay. We used to delight in waiting for the unsuspecting tourist to walk along the beach, and yes you could always tell who was a tourist by the white legs, and way too much beach gear. Then we would just begin to be the most over the top flaming group of Gay individuals you have ever seen. Nothing naughty, and really nothing that would offend, but just a lot of waves and high pitched giggles and hugging. And we would always, always offer them a beer. May not seem funny to someone who was not there but it was a real hoot!

Miss Dot, As a transplanted Yankee, relatively new to Charleston, I have to say you've made me "plant my roots". I believe I could have been a Charlestonian in an earlier life come home at last. I started out with "Isle of Palms" and just finished "Pawley's Island". I could almost smell the salt and feel the breeze. As a very young child in the early 50's my father was stationed in Charleston with the Navy. I have always dreamed of coming back. I am so glad I did and now you are engraining that Southern charm in me so I feel like I've always been here. I'm on my way out now to purchase my next installment in my "Southern Roots" Thank you

I can't wait to read "Bull's Island!" I check on Amazon.com all the time to see whether you have a new book coming, and pre-order it immediately when I find that a new one is due. Love your writing; it makes me feel like there is another world out there besides land-locked southern Ohio! Thanks and keep 'em coming. You're amazing!

I am so happy to learn you are writing a sequel to Sullivan's! Finding your first book several years ago, when you had just started writing, was truly a miracle for me. And, I think it is a bit miracululous the way I've kept stumbling upon your books every single time I've needed to hear your voice telling me to stand strong with head held high through each wonderful story. If I were to trace my life on a timeline through the last four years, every dot would coincide with one of your books. Each one helped me get through, over, under, around, and to your next book. So, now I'm at my next dot. I'm so very glad that Bull's Island is soon to come. My birthday is April 2nd. I think I will buy the hardback for myself for my birthday. I can't wait to walk that beach on Sullivan's again! It is truly beautiful, and it is just as you described it. I have seen it at both sunrise and sunset. Didn't have time to spend the day there though. The ONLY reason I would have ever gone there in the first place, was because of your very first book, Sullivan's Island. Thanks Dot and keep writing! And now I have an excuse to reread my paperback copy of Sullivan's Island, (purchased on the day my oldest son left for his one year-tour in Iraq), which I have displayed in all of its raggedy, dog-eared, well-worn glory on the most prominent shelf in my computer room surrounded by all of my antique treasures for these many years. Just so you know, I have been a true Harry Potter fan from the beginning also. However, her books are stacked on a an antique ice-cream parlor chair in the corner of this room. In the sequel, I hope she sees loved ones in the mirror, I hope she makes up with (and understands) her Daddy, I hope there is a terrible storm, I hope you'll give us little hints and insights on all of the other characters in your books, I hope you'll throw in a little romance and cooking advice, and I hope you'll finally convince me in this one to take that last big step. I believe it is called CHANGE. Also, I hope you eat lots and lots of great Low Country food in this one. Never ate grits till I visited South Carolina. I keep a box of instant grits in my cabinet all the time now. Yummy. Lots of carbs, and only as a special treat, but very good. Love and hugs, Trish, OK

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your books. I have vacationed on Pawleys Island and Charleston with my husband and now we stay every year at Litchfiled with the children. I have enjoyed all of you books, your descriptions are so vivid it makes me feel like I am back there myself. I really enjoy recognizing all of the locations that we have seen and visited, especially those around Litchfiled and Pawleys. I keep telling my husband that I am a Southern girl living in a Northern girl's body! I am hoping to make it to your Naperville, IL signing and Anderson's in April. Keep the brilliant works coming!

I wanted to tell you how much your books have meant to me. I am from Virginia Beach, but spent time in the Carolina's a child. Your books are so vivid and beatuifully written and have helped me deal with very difficult times. I work at a bookstore in Troy, Michigan now and have decided to promote your entire list of work form April through June. With the release of BULLS ISLAND I felt it was time to get people around these parts to read your fantastic fiction. Our store book group will be reading BULLS ISLAND for May-June and I will let you know how it all went. I have talked ot HarperCollins and am trying to get a poster for our store window so everyone will see the beautiful cover art. Again, I love your work and your characters are so realized and i can only hope my books will be as great as yours. I am in the process of writing my first book and have already completed a book of poetry. You have inspired me over the years to continue and pursue with this my love of writing; to never give up and be real. You and Chris Bohjalian are the best writers out there.

Dear Ms. Frank: I love reading your books about the Low Country because they remind me of my father's family, who are all longtime South Carolinians. My father was raised in Coumbia - Clemson, '39. I have cousins who live in Mt. Pleasant and I think that Charleston is one of the most wonderful cities in America. Reading your books reminds me of my South Carolina relatives - their cuisine, manners, love of family and South Carolina, and their outlook on life. A source of pride in our family is that one of our ancestors was the first European settler on Kiawah, Island - Vanderhorst is the family name there. So, I have roots in Charleston and will always love stories about the city. Thank you for your marvelous Low Country stories - I always look forward to your newest book! Sincerely, Marie Simkins Cain
